Welcome to the Island Crest Lodge!

History

The Island Crest Lodge, formerly the Halverson Office Building, was built in 1990 based on concepts developed by the original owners, Diane and Lowell Halverson. Mr. Halverson, a lawyer and artist, worked closely with the architect to design the second floor of the building to resemble a Native American "longhouse" with large beam trusses, open ceiling, and lots of natural light. Mr. Halverson also created the Native American-inspired artwork in the adjoining private park, including "Broken Promises," the standing and "broken" totem poles seen on the left side of the picture above. In the lower right-hand of the picture, striped iron salmon "swim" up the stairs to the building. Many other pieces are located in the adjacent private park, which includes the Bear's Gate, a work formally installed following a traditional celebration performed by elders of the Tlingit Nation from the coastal regions of Alaska. The building and grounds won the Mercer Island Design Commission's 1994 Beautification Award.
